Conservation program on Koh Tao, Thailand
Diving on Koh Tao is happy to announce that we will be now offering a conservation program available either on a 1 day trial or even as an option of getting even more into it by joing the unlimited program valid for 1 year for our Dive Master in training and Instructor Candidate.
The good news with this program is that even as Open Water Diver, you will be able to join Lee Sparkes, founder and person in charge of the program.
As our PADI Open Water course include 4 nights and can be completed over 3 days, you will be able to join the PADI Open Water course +, meaning you will be able to use the 4th day for the Conservation of Reef and Aquatic Life program.
Actually every courses we offer will now have the “plus” option giving you an extra day on your course to join the program.
If you are already a certified diver (either PADI or any other organization) and are planing on coming to Koh Tao for some fun dives rather then a course, of course the Marine Conservation option is still there!
What does the program include?
The course will concentrate on the value of keeping our natural resources as abundant as possible. The will be lecture and briefing about growth rates, water parameters, climate change, human interference and more.
You will also have the change to participate to a Fragging Workshop and data will then be collected and recorded on the newly fragged specimens.
Fragging is helping coral to reproduce.
Coral propagation refers to the reproduction of coral and is often accomplished by marine aquarists through a process called fragmentation or, as it is commonly called, “fragging”.
Your fragged coral will have data collected, but you will be also looking at the data from other corals in the tank. Some of them will be ready to be introduced to the reef. Therefore, there will be another part of the course in the water for 2 open water dives.
Going on the afternoon boat, the first dive will be more focused on re-introduction and the second dive will be concentrated on the collection of new coral colonies.
Soon, a new tank with Sea Horses will also be introduced to the program. Already a few species of small fish have joined the tank, but it’s only the beginning. Who said there was not enough Sea Horses on Koh Tao?! The program of Lee will help on building up a much bigger population. More details to come about the breeding part of the program…but rays, shrimps, and even sharks are part of the plans of Lee!
How much does it cost?
One day course – 3,900 THB (includes all related equipment) Unlimited experience – 9,500 THB. Available for DMT’s/IDC’s who wish to help during their stay on Koh Tao More information to come on our website and for now, if you are interest to join the program or add a “+” to your diving course by planing an extra day on the Conservation of Reef and Aquatic Life, you can contact us via email at firstname.lastname@example.org
